LED Pole Lighting Lux Level Standards Requirement

Q: What is Pole Lighting Lux Level Standards ?

This is not an easy-to-answer question on if there is a pole lighting lux level standards really ?

Below i am going to explain it into more details for the possible different pole lighting project lux level requirements.

By then, you will be surprised to find such kind of question more complicated than you can imagine to seek an accurate answer to this question.

Over the past 10 years, LED technology becomes quite popular in custom lighting application.

Because of its higher lumen efficacy and higher efficiency in energy consumption compared with HID lamps.

Among of various LED lighting applications,  LED pole lighting is the most commonly commercial lighting area across United States.

However, there are still long way to go to replace all inefficient traditional HID (metal halide, high-pressure sodium, mercury vapor lamps)

As you can see HID everywhere in the parking lot, ball field, roadway, car park etc..

Moreover, after using about half an year or so, the HID lamp lumen decay is very serious.

Besides, it emits dark yellowish color which create a potential danger for  passers-by or pedestrian.

LED VS High pressure sodium light

Given that issue, we need to have these old HID bulbs(MH, HPS, MV) replaced as early as possible.

Your impulse to change out these old HID lamps might sometimes pop out in your mind.

However, the biggest problem is that how much lux level is suitable for your pole lighting application.

if you have no idea about that, you would waste lots of money on the lighting fixtures but cannot solve your safety concern?

In other words, is there any guidelines to teach me to measure the pole lighting lux level standards ?

There are several considerations if a property manager are gonna to replace it

  • Illumination intensity: how much lumen is the light ?
  • Illumination uniformity: how consistent is the foot candle level from place to place across the lighting area.
  • Color Rendering Index(CRI): how accurately the light render colors.
  • Luminare distribution: the optical lighting distribution type as explained in my previous blog.
  • Luminare layout: where the efficient equipment is placed is as important as how used
  • Lumen efficacy: how much lumen per watt of the light fixture delivers
  • Luminaire lifespan: How long the light last before replaced.

How much footcandle level is proper to enhance security lighting purpose ?

Well, I’d say there is not a standard numeric data to measure all conditions.

As for any individual case, their requirement are varied from each other because of the applicable locations and individual preference.

But I will try to offer some operational data from IES which is referenced by most federal design requirements.

Parking lot lighting lux level standands:

Basic Enhanced security
Minimum Horizontal Footcandles on Pavement 0.2fc 0.5fc
Maximum Horizontal Footcandles on Pavement 4fc 7.5fc
Uniformity Ratio, Maximum:Minimum 20:01 15:01
Minimum Vertical Footcandles at five (5) feet Above Pavement 0.1fc 0.25fc

Outdoor Ball field lighting lux level standards:

Ball field lighting is a little complicated, its foot candles requirement only not varies in different game such as basketball court, football/soccer court, tennis court, baseball court, volleyball court, but also varies greatly in different games levels, this can be referred in the National Collegiate Athletic Association for different sport events best lighting practices.

Horizontal illuminance:  the amount of light falling on the court surface; equal to lighting level, measured by lux (or foot-candles in the USA).

Uniformity of illuminance: a parameter describing how evenly light is distributed over the court surface. =Emax/Emin. is the maximum value of the horizontal illuminance calculated/measured on the reference grid divided by the minimum value.
